Stretch marks can be associated with a period of very rapid growth (especially in adolescence) or with significant weight gain, especially in pregnancy. Initially, stretch marks have a purplish-red appearance, but they whiten over time, while the skin may appear flabby and atrophic due to a loss of collagen in this area.
